Thank you for your decision to ban guga hunting

Suomen luonnonsuojeluliitto (Finnish Nature Conservation Association) would like to thank you for the internationally significant decision to ban guga hunting this year.

We had a similar discussion in Finland about spring hunting of waterfowl a few decades ago. That was also an old tradition, based on the fact that food supplies were low in the archipelago in spring.

However, culture changes in time, place and social and economic context. Nowadays, hunting during the breeding season is no longer necessary for anyone. It is now a hobby, not a livelihood.

Hunting during the breeding season is not sustainable. That is why responsible hunters stopped spring hunting of waterfowl first in the Satakunta region. Later, the state stopped it completely after the decision of the Court of Justice of the European Union.

Your decision can contribute to the recovery of Gannet populations that have recently declined throughout the North Atlantic region and in the Nordic countries.
