The Kuopio Naturalists’ Society was founded in December 1896. It is one of the oldest scientific societies in Finland. The object of the Society is to promote conservation of nature and to support scientific research in wide sense. From its three funds the society grants scolarships. Regular meetings of the society and its special sections take place at Kuopio Museum. Also many kind of excursions are organised. The Natural History Department of the Museum was founded by the society.
The activities of the society is concentrated in sections that are devoted to ornithology, mycology, astronomy and the special sections for youth. The members of the section devoted to nature conservation are also members of the Finnish Association for Nature Conservation (Suomen luonnonsuojeluliitto, SLL).
