Introduction

Urban Nature is accessible to the inhabitants of Oulu every day, and all year round. An important aspect of our identity as citizens of Oulu is wrapped up in our proximity to the natural environment in the city. Forests, the seashore, marshland, the riverbanks, lakeshores, parks and many other natural environments characteristic of Oulu can be found on our doorstep.

Many inhabitants of Oulu have already discovered the importance of Nature for our city. A large number of these are people who have moved here from elsewhere, and who have recently got to know their new home town. The natural environment is precious, varied and well worth getting to know.

In our rapidly growing city, the built environment encroaches bit by bit on the natural environment. We citizens are an integral part of the urban environment. When Nature suffers, our our well-being is threatened.

The Nature Conservation Society of Oulu, OLSY, is committed to the natural environment in Oulu and to a healthy living environment which is in harmony with Nature. OLSY is the local organisation of the North-Ostrobothnian district of the Finnish Nature Conservation Association. Our society numbers over 700 members. We organise courses and public events. We make excursions into the natural environment. We provide education about Nature and environmental conservation. We submit statements to the authorities on issues concerned with Nature and environmental conservation. We take a stand and take initiatives on matters of topical concern. We monitor the state of the environment.

Join us in our varied activities for the conservation of Nature and the environment! Help us work for a better future.
