The Finnish Association for Nature Conservation

Suomen luonnonsuojeluliitto, the SLL is the largest non-governmental organization for environmental protection and nature conservation in Finland. Its objectives include the promotion of sustainable production and consumption patterns and the protection of biodiversity.

norppatunnus-web.jpgIn order to pursue its objectives, the SLL:

  • takes the initiative, makes proposals and recommendations, takes a stand on current environmental issues as well as influences national decisionmakers to respect environmental demands in all fields of society.
  • promotes public awareness and environmental education: the SLL publishes a monthly magazine called Suomen Luonto (Nature of Finland) and six times a year a newspaper for members called Luonnonsuojelija (Conservationist), as well as other kinds of environmental material, like books, brochures, leaflets, and calendars. As a national NGO the material is produced mainly only in Finnish. The SLL also organizes study courses, seminars, excursions, camps and public meetings.
  • organizes national and local campaigns, and manages projects on different themes. Like public participation, i.e., environmental taxation, waste prevention, promotion of renewable energy sources by ecolabelling the electricity, conservation of forests in Southern Finland and on issues of comprehensive protection of water systems.

A big part of the work is done on a voluntary basis but SLL also employs over 30 people working at our headquarters, regional offices and at the Suomen Luonto periodical. The SLL has about 30,000 individual members in 203 local associations, organized in 15 regional districts. The Nature League (Luonto-Liitto) functions as nationwide youth organisation under SLL, it has about 4,000 members.

The SLL participates in international cooperation especially with the environmental NGO's in the Baltic Sea area and in the European Union. The main emphasis has been on raising public awareness on global environmental issues and since 1995, when Finland entered the European Union, to influence European policymaking.

The SLL is a member of the international organisation Coalition Clean Baltic, CCB (a coalition of environmental NGO's in the Baltic Sea countries), the European Environmental Bureau, EEB (a federation of 132 citizens' environmental organisations in Europe), the World Conservation Union - IUCN, the Climate Action Network, CAN and the Taiga Rescue Network, TRN (a network of NGO's, Indigenous Peoples and Nations working for the protection and sustainable use of the Boreal Forests). National organisations of great importance to the SLL's international work on environment and development issues are the Finnish Association for Promoting Fair Trade (Reilun kaupan edistämisyhdistys) and the Siemenpuu-foundation Cooperation Fund for People's Movements. Both of the latter organisations were established in 1998 and the SLL is one of the founding members.
